Retracing the journeys of three men in a boat

LEISURELY days on the water seem a very remote prospect during the dreariest and dullest of the times of winter, but sunny days on the River Thames can be enjoyed again through the pictures of a new book that retraces the journeys of Jerome K Jerome and his companions in his original Three Men in a Boat.
Warning after burglars target boat

POLICE have warned boaters to be on their guard after thieves got away with a £500 haul from a boat moored at Barton Marina in Staffordshire.
A police spokesman said the doors were forced to gain entrance to the unoccupied vessel, causing £50 of damage.
Maureen Shaw Panel unveiled at Wardle Lock

MORE than 100 people turned up at Wardle Lock, in Middlewich, on Saturday (23 March) to join in the unveiling of a commemorative panel about the life of Maureen Shaw and the working boat community.
She had lived in the Lock Cottage at Wardle – on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal – with the result that it was often referred to as ‘Maureen’s Lock’ and she was well known to both visiting boaters and the local community.
Narrowboat fire
25 March 2013.
FIRE destroyed a narrowboat on the River Nene in Northampton early on Saturday morning. Firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the blaze in the 45ft boat which contained two propane gas cylinders. A man was treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
Split post causes Standedge stoppage

THE Huddersfield Narrow Canal is currently closed to through traffic following the discovery of a split in a post supporting a lock gate on the Diggle flight.
The damaged gate at Lock 32W will not close properly making it difficult to fill the lock close to Ward Lane.
Health warning over canal bed mussels

EATING mussels harvested from a drained canal bed in Burnley could have fatal consequences, a doctor has warned.
Council officials issued a warning after culvert repair works on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal exposed a channel filled with freshwater mussels in the Weaver’s Triangle area.
Canal festival sponsorship boost

DERBYSHIRE County Council has pledged repeat sponsorship for the arts section of Chesterfield Canal Festival.
A £2500 package has been agreed through Markham Vale's public arts initiative funding for the event which will take place on Saturday and Sunday June 29-30.
Help needed to complete award winning Hazel

A CASH crisis is facing the project to use the restored narrowboat Hazel as a well being boat.
The Wooden Canal Boat Society will be launching the rejuvenated boat on May 3, but money is running out.
Broads reveals new water strategy

TODAY (Friday March 22nd) is World Water Day and the Broads Authority is calling on the public, landowners, farmers, conservation organisations and water companies to do their bit to improve the health of its waters.
The authority is revealing its new biodiversity and water strategy which aims to improve the water quality, quantity and wildlife within the Broads.
Mon & Brec reopens after £1.2m scheme

A STRETCH of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal at Llangattock near Powys has reopened to navigation following a six-month project costing £1.2 million. Deputy minister for skills and technology, Jeff Cuthbert, officially reopened the 470m stretch this week following relining work. The towpath between Bridges 116 and 118 is still closed for reconstruction work and is expected to reopen in mid April.
