FOR those who have already enjoyed the work of Geoffrey Lewis, his latest book, Cattle & Sheep & Boats, will be a welcome addition to the bookshelf.

Characters from the canals to the outback

This book picks up the stories of the author’s colourful characters from the end of the last volume of his fascinating trilogy about life in the working days of England’s canals.

In an unusual but effective style, the book takes the reader through 30 years of the characters’ lives from the 1950s; through the medium of letters written to each other during a time of great change on the canals and a greater change for one family who inherit a ranch in the outback of Australia.

A story set around Britain’s working canals and boat people – it is a way of life now gone but researched and told with warmth and sympathy by a true canal enthusiast.
