Cruise it or lose it

AS A regular boater of the BCN and the Walsall Canal, I feel I must say a little about the aforementioned canal. Your Old Bilge Pump article (Last Word, Issue 79, May) was good in highlighting the potential but just stopped short of encouraging people to visit.

The letters page this July (Talkback, Issue 81) had a letter which is enough to put anybody off going. This year I have boated the full length of the Walsall twice with no problems.

Okay, I admit you have to be sensible, but with not too much thought and careful planning it’s as safe a canal as any – we all must really use this canal. The more boats use it – the better the canal and the indigenous population would be!

To its credit, British Waterways has dredged this and the surrounding Wyrely and Essington – including constructing new secure moorings in strategic locations to make this a cruising route to really enjoy.

In all my years of cruising this way (on and off for 40 years) – its present state is the best I can remember... thanks to Dean Davies and gang and the BCNS on limited resources.

So come on all boaters get to the back water! Cruise it or lose it!
