THE Tanat Feeder, an important source of water for the Montgomery Canal which brings in water from the River Tanat above the locks at Carreghofa, is undergoing some major dredging work.
This is being carried out as part of the Levelling Up Fund [LUF] works being undertaken on the Montgomery Canal.
The hope, expressed by John Dodwell, chairman of the Montgomery Partnership, is to see the Llanymynech to Carreghofa mile being dredged early in 2023 as a further part of these works.
The equally important Penarth Feeder, which provides water from the River Severn close to the Freestone locks, was dredged earlier this year using money from the Welsh Government’s Nature Networks Fund.
Montgomery Canal Partnership was formed in 1999 and brings together various groups interested in completing the restoration of the canal.
These groups include the Canal & River Trust, the county councils, statutory agencies involved with the built and natural heritage, wildlife trust and canal restoration groups. The latter are leading the Restore the Montgomery Canal Funding Appeal, with the partnership taking the lead in progressing the restoration.
