SHROPSHIRE Union Canal volunteers devoted their work party in December to preparing a new compound site south of Crickheath Bridge for the new Montgomery Canal restoration project in 2023.
An electrical supply line was fitted to enable a sump pump to be fitted next to Crickheath Bridge to remove residual water entering the channel.
The coping stones and drystone wall of the old wharf were given a detailed assessment of work needed to be done there.
Trees were removed from further down the channel and a considerable amount of brash was burned to clear the path for the impending work.
Final items of equipment including pipes and bags of sand were transported from the old site by grab lorry and installed on the new compound.
The hospitality shelter was dismantled and stored, ready to be transported when the three steel equipment containers and the cement mixer are removed and reinstalled at Crickheath. Some serious remedial welding took place to replace sections of the roof of the welfare container.
A nostalgic afternoon tea break took place on the Sunday afternoon as the team was about to say farewell to its home since 2014 at Lloyd’s Animal Feeds.
