Monthly market raises funds for canal group

A FUNDRAISING food and art market took place in and around the Grade II listed canal transshipment warehouse at Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire.

These markets are held every month to raise funds for, and awareness of, the Whaley Bridge canal group.

The group is working to conserve Whaley Bridge basin, the warehouse and the canal towpath up to Bridge 32 of the Peak Forest Canal. The day was cold but bright which gave people plenty of opportunity to have a good wander round the stalls both outside and inside the warehouse, where a giant paper and wire model of a Chinook helicopter hung from the roof.

Helicopters were used in August 2019 to drop big bags of stones on the face of the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir to stabilise it while all the water was pumped out. Repairs are still ongoing.
