In April, Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust (LHCRT) will take part in the Big Give Green Match Fund appeal to raise £180,000 in just one week! These funds will be used to construct a vital lock on the Lichfield Canal along Tamworth Road.
This crucial appeal aims to raise a game-changing £90,000 in donations in just one week, which will be generously matched by Big Give’s Champions to double the difference and make a total of £180.000.

From noon on April 22 until midday on April 29, 2025, every pound donated will be matched. This is your chance to double your impact and help fund the construction of a critical new canal lock.
The new lock is key to managing water flow and enabling boats to navigate through a culvert under Cricket Lane. It is part of a 650-metre stretch of canal, which is set to be completed in 2026—a significant milestone in restoring the Lichfield Canal
Christine Howles, Communications Trustee at LHCRT, said:
“We’re looking to raise a total of £180,000 to fund the lock’s construction. In order to access the £90,000 we have in the matching pot, we need to raise £90,000 in online donations.
Every donation, big or small, gets doubled at no extra cost to you, so it will go twice as far. Please support the appeal starting on 22 April – your genrosity will make all the difference!”

The Lichfield Canal will be a vital blue-green corridor from Brownhills to Huddlesford, connecting the Wyrley and Essington Canal to the Coventry Canal, creating valuable connected aquatic, marginal and land habitats. It will also protect against the impacts of climate change through flood attenuation and carbon capture, and improve active travel links, giving great alternatives to carbon-based transport both locally and regionally.
