The Canal & River Trust is saddened that, sometime between February 9 and 12 , 11 exhibits were stolen from the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.
A spokesman said: “We are working with the police and have temporarily closed the Island Warehouse within the museum where many smaller objects from our collection are displayed, and where the theft occurred, whilst a security review is completed.”
The items stolen include the pictured model of Comberbatch, used by ICI to transport chemicals in the Mersey/Weaver area along with several small model engines and three large ‘Tilly’ lamps.
He continued: “We understand that a closure of part of our museum is disappointing for visitors and thank everyone affected for their patience and support. We hope people appreciate how serious such a theft is and the importance of the investigation and security review currently taking place.
“Holding 90% of the UK’s inland waterwayscollection, including some 15,000 objects and more than 50 boats, the National Waterways Museum is much-loved and tells a unique story. We recently carried out a significant exercise cataloguing our collection, so we were able to identify quickly which items were missing.”
